The Red Dot Players are excited to announce auditions for their Winter 2024 production of Murder on the Orient Express, Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of the classic detective novel by Agatha Christie. We encourage actors of all backgrounds, identities, and experience levels to audition for our production.
“Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer—in case he or she decides to strike again” (Samuel French).
We are casting the following roles. It is possible that some actors will play more than one character:
HERCULE POIROT (M, 40+, Belgian)
A fastidious detective, famous for using his "little grey cells" to solve even the most baffling of crimes. He wears a preposterous moustache and an air of pathos.
MONSIEUR BOUC (M, 30+, Belgian)
The director of the company that operates the Orient Express. He is urbane, affable, and an old friend of Poirot’s.
MARY DEBENHAM (F, late 20s, English)
A sensible young Englishwoman. She is carrying on a clandestine relationship with Colonel Arbuthnot.
HECTOR MACQUEEN (M, 30s, American)
The personal secretary of Samuel Ratchett. He has a nervous, uncertain disposition.
MICHEL THE CONDUCTOR (M, 40+, French)
The Parisian conductor of the Orient Express. He is steadfast and capable.
PRINCESS DRAGOMIROFF (F, 70s, Russian)
An exiled aristocrat. She is proud, imperious, and acerbic.
GRETA OHLSSON (F, 30s, Swedish)
A devout missionary serving as Princess Dragomiroff’s assistant. She is prone to emotional outbursts.
COUNTESS ANDRENYI (F, 20s, Hungarian)
A doctor who married into the aristocracy. She is intelligent and resourceful, and Poirot greatly admires her.
HELEN HUBBARD (F, 50s, American)
A brash Minnesotan who has been married four times. She possesses a healthy libido and a love of show tunes.
COLONEL ARBUTHNOT (M, 30s, Scottish)
A stalwart, passionate solider. He is carrying on a clandestine relationship with Mary Debenham.
SAMUEL RATCHETT (M, 30+, American)
A rude, aggressive, and thoroughly disagreeable import-exporter. He attempts to hire Poirot to investigate the threatening letters he has been receiving.
HEAD WAITER (M, late 20s+, French)
The waiter who serves Poirot in the dining room of the Tokatlian Hotel in Istanbul.
DAISY ARMSTRONG (F, 10, American)
The little girl kidnapped and killed by mobster Bruno Cassetti. She appears in flashbacks in the play. (This could be a pre-recorded performance.)
Actors will be asked to read selections from the script, which they will be provided with ahead of time. They are encouraged—but not required—to use the characters’ accents during their auditions. Auditions will take approximately fifteen minutes.
Rehearsals will commence in January of 2024. They will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 PM and on Sundays from 1:00-3:00 PM. We will perform the play in mid March.
